Protectors Fail To Shine In Charity Shield

5th February 2012

Home United Football Club suffered a 0-2 defeat to Tampines Rovers FC in the Great Eastern Charity Shield held at the Jalan Besar Stadium tonight.

Playing in front of a boistrous crowd, our Protectors were missing several first team players. Franklin Anzite had to sit out, as he waits his work permit, while John Wilkinson's ITC has not arrive. Talisman Qiu Li was not risked as he prepares for his beep test on Tuesday.

In their absence, Zahid Ahmad, Roshan Rai and Mazreswan Masturi were all given starts. Pre-seson defensive frailties were still in evidence as on 4th minute, a clip pass by Jamil Ali caught Zahid and Kenji on the wrong side and after a mad scramble, Tampines new signing Davor Priskor nodded home to give the S-League Champions an early lead.

On 14 minutes, another through ball over the top saw Jamil Ali presented with a good chance but he lofted the ball over the bar. 5 minutes later, experienced defender Rosman Sulaiman pulled up after a tackle and had to be replaced by Hafiz Nor. On 24 minutes, our Protectors were sliced apart and only a last ditched block by Kenji Arai averted the danger.

Home United's best opportunity came 5 minutes before half-time when a raking pass by Captain Shi Jiayi found the speedy Hafiz Nor, who could only shoot straight into Tampines custodian Sasa Dreven.

The second period saw our Protectors looking to fight back. Star forward Frederic Mendy was seeing plenty of the ball but often lacked support. New signing Shotaro Ihata has yet to link up well with Mendy. Ihata was hardly into the match in the second period and our Protectors failed to carve out any decent chance.

On the hour mark, a wonderful passing move by Tampines Rovers shredded our Protectors apart and new signing Gligor Gligorov capped the wonderful move with a stinging low shot past Lionel Lewis to double Tampines' lead.

Two goals down, our Protectors were unable to mount any comeback as Tampines Rovers comfortably held on to lift the Charity Shield. It must be said that our Protectors failed to shine tonight and with the season set to kick off in 5 days time, there is much work to be done!
